Prairie State College Archive Room

Prairie State College’s 60th Anniversary Celebrations are continuing throughout the College, various Community Events and in the Archives. This month’s theme is old College artifacts such as mugs, flags, logo designs and banners. If you are interested in seeing how the College’s Original Flag, Logo and Banner looked like and other knick knacks, the Archives will displaying them in Room 1222 during the month of November.

To commemorate 60th anniversary of the Prairie State College, Archives will display various photos and original costume designs of the plays that were performed by the College’s Performing Arts Department in 70’s during the Month of October.

If you are interested in seeing these items and other archival treasures you may visit the College Archives in Room 1222 in the Library.

Over the years, various state and government institutions and private companies have awarded Prairie State College for its contributions to the economic and educational development of the communities it serves. As part of the College’s 60th Anniversary Celebrations, The Archives will be displaying various awards given to the College by these organizations in 80’s and 90’s.

If you are interested in seeing these awards you may visit The Archives in Room 1216 from August 27, 2018 until September 27, 2018.

Founded in 1957 as Bloom Township Junior College, Prairie State College’s first classes were held in 1958 in the basement of the First Christian Church. Originally established to offer only transfer liberal arts courses and occupational-technical courses, the College was reorganized in 1967 as a Class I junior college. With the combining of four high school districts into an enlarged territory, the College was renamed Prairie State College.

North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited Bloom Community College Nursing Program Associate Degree in September 20, 1965 and the College began to admit students in September 1966.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the College, The Prairie State College Archives will be showcasing various photos taken during the Nursing Graduation Ceremonies this month. You may visit the archives to see these photographs from July 25, 2018 until August 25, 2018 in Room 1222.

Founded in 1957 as Bloom Township Junior College, Prairie State College’s (PSC) first classes were held in 1958 in the basement of the First Christian Church. Originally established to offer only transfer liberal arts courses and occupational-technical courses, The College was reorganized in 1967 as a Class I junior college. With the combining of four high school districts into an enlarged territory, Bloom Township Junior College was renamed Prairie State College.

In August 1, 1963, Bloom College Dental Assisting School received full accreditation. It was the first Dental Assisting School in a Community College in Illinois to be fully accredited.

In January 1967, Dental Hygiene Program was approved to to begin classes. In September 1967 it moved from its original location Wallace House to Saint James Hospital.

After a few setbacks due the accreditation process, Dental Assisting Program was reinstated in February 1974 and classes resumed in September 1974.

Today, Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Program is continuing its classes on the new campus on Vollmer Road and Halsted Street.

As part of the Commemoration of 60th anniversary of the Prairie State College, Library Archives will be displaying old photos of the Dental Assisting/Dental Hygiene Students and Faculty in Room 1222 from June 26, 2018 until July 26, 2018.

Prairie State College celebrated its 25th anniversary of becoming a two year Junior College in 1983. Since it started teaching classes in the basement of a Church in Chicago Heights, the College made a huge impact on the economic and social development of the communities it serves over the years. Former History Professor and first Archivist of Prairie State College, Dr. Richard Sherman expresses the challenges and successes the College experienced in his book titled “Prairie State College in its first quarter century 1957-1982: A Community College History” published in 1992.

If you’re interested in learning about this book and other items about the history of the College, you may visit Room 1222 from May 22, 2018 until June 22nd, 2018.

Archive News

As part of the 60th anniversary of the Prairie State College Archives will be showcasing photos of some of the Groundbreaking and Dedication ceremonies of main campus building as well as various phases of the construction project which started in 1973 and completed in 1976. Original Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on October 2, 1972.

If you’re interested in seeing various old photos of the Campus Construction and Development you may visit the Archives in Room 1222 in the Library from April 21, 2018 until May 21, 2018.

Archive News: Monthly Displays at Prairie State College Archives

Did you know Prairie State College started to offer classes at Bloom High School in 1958 before it moved to its current location on Vollmer and Halsted Streets? To commemorate 60th anniversary of the College, the library will be showcasing historic photos, newspaper clips, awards and the other items that highlight the College’s accomplishments in Room 1222 in the Library throughout 2018. Our first display will exhibit the photos, newspaper clippings, awards and other memorabilia that documents the history of the Bloom Community College. Among the items being displayed are the newspaper articles that announced the dedication ceremony of the new College building that was located on the corner of 10th street and Dixie Highway and yearbooks and other photos.
