Check this Book Out! Modern Piracy by David F. Marley

This Month we a putting up a New Books display with a lot of great reads! One book worth mentioning here is Modern Piracy by David F. Marley. This book discusses contemporary world issues and one issue that is causing major disturbances to world commerce is modern piracy. We all know about the pirates of the Caribbean and perhaps the Barbary pirates who caused much damage in the Atlantic and Mediterranean but these modern pirates are much more civilized, tech-savvy, armed, elusive, and dangerous.  Besides this great book we have many good reads in our New Books Display this month.

The Wretched of the Earth

“National liberation, national renaissance, the restoration of nationhood to the people, commonwealth: whatever may be the headings used or the new formulas introduced, decolonization is always a violent phenomenon.”  -Frantz Fanon-

These words shook the world when Fanon wrote the “Wretched of the earth” in 1957 and published it in 1961. By articulating the definition, purpose, mechanics, and philosophy of “liberating-violence,” Fanon gave premise to millions of the wretched to throw off the chains of colonization from their minds, bodies, and souls. The African continent in particular immediately went up in revolution as colony after colony regained their sovereignty after Fanon shared his words with the earth.  Some would call Fanon a rabid psychiatrist espousing hatred and evil, however upon close reading and comprehension of Fanon’s magnum opus, one discerns the eloquent rationale of a revolutionary whose people have been severely attacked with an even worse vitriolic violence than what Fanon preaches: Institutional violence.  To fully understand Fanon one must read Fanon. A stark contrast from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, or Thoreau; Fanon’s views have inspired colorful commentators on colonialism and institutional aggression such as Eldridge Cleaver, Malcolm X, and Bobby Seale.  Once banned in the U.S and many other countries of the Earth by the suzerains who feared the liberating power of “The Wretched of the earth;” We at the PSC library now have available to you a must read treatise on colonialism and class-warfare. If politics is your interest, this book may interest you!

“Have the courage to read this book” -Jean Paul Sarte-
